Last week, we learned that Amy Schumer would be playing the role of iconic Mattel doll Barbie for an upcoming film adaptation. Apparently not everyone is stoked on the idea, though, as the comedian and actress has had to issue a response to an unfortunate onslaught of online backlash.
As previously reported, the new PG-rated film will tell the story of a doll living in Barbieland who doesn't fit in with her peers, so she opts to go off adventuring in the real world. Mirroring the message of the film, Schumer has taken to Instagram to shut down unrealistic body standards and take the wind out of trolls' sails.
She posted a photo of herself in a bathing suit with a caption that reads: "Is it fat shaming if you know you're not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don't think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love. Where's the shame? It's not there. It's an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. I'm a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I'm a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making tv and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I'm fearless like you can be."
She went on to thanks those who had offered their support, but extended "sympathy" to the trolls have taken offence to her being cast in the role.
"I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice," her post continued. "It's that kind of response that let's you know something's wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it. Anyone who has ever been bullied or felt bad about yourself I am out there fighting for you, for us."
She concluded by stating, "I am proud to lead by example" and quoted her own book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo: "I say if I'm beautiful, I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will."
The new Barbie film is expected to begin production this spring, followed by a 2018 release.
