Alberta-raised Cree actor Alyssa Wapanatâhk will play Indigenous princess Tiger Lily in Disney's forthcoming live-action adaptation of Peter Pan.
Wapanatâhk confirmed her involvement in the yet-to-be-detailed Peter Pan & Wendy, the Canadian Press reports, though her agent said the actor is not doing interviews at this time. A representative for Disney Canada told CP Tuesday (October 20) that there is no other information on the film at this time.
Wapanatâhk wrote on her website that she is a member of the Bigstone Cree First Nation, born in Fort McMurray, AB, and raised both there and in Conklin. She notes that her surname translates as "First star in the sky or morning star."
Last September, the 22 year-old wrote, directed and co-produced short film The Boy and the Braid (xnapes kasêkipatwât), which follows the social struggles of an Indigenous teenager. You can find that below.
In March, it was reported that Peter Pan & Wendy will feature Ever Anderson as Wendy and Alexander Molony as Peter Pan. Pete's Dragon director David Lowery has been attached to direct and also co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks. At the time, sources said the film's release would be theatrical.
