In the wake of the explosive Harvey Weinstein scandal, a number of people close to the producer have distanced themselves from him and condemned his actions. His brother Bob Weinstein, with whom Harvey started the Weinstein Company, has gone on record to condemn Harvey. Now, Bob has been accused of sexual harassment too.
Variety reports that Amanda Segel, showrunner on Spike TV's Weinstein Company drama The Mist, alleges that Bob Weinstein was overly persistent in his attempts to start a romantic relationship with her, asking her out for private dinners despite her constantly turning him down.
"'No' should be enough," Segel said in a statement to Variety. "After 'no,' anybody who has asked you out should just move on. Bob kept referring to me that he wanted to have a friendship. He didn't want a friendship. He wanted more than that. My hope is that 'no' is enough from now on."
Segel alleges that the harassment went on for three months in 2016 and included invitations to hotel rooms, probing questions about Segel's dating life and jokes that she could be fired if she didn't act how Weinstein wanted. Eventually, she claims she had to get her lawyer, David Fox of Myman Greenspan, to demand that Bob stop or she'd quit the show.
Representatives for Bob Weinstein told Variety that the accusations were false. "Bob Weinstein had dinner with Ms. Segel in L.A. in June 2016," they said. "He denies any claims that he behaved inappropriately at or after the dinner. It is most unfortunate that any such claim has been made."
Bert Fields, a lawyer for Bob Weinstein, added, "Variety's story about Bob Weinstein is riddled with false and misleading assertions by Ms. Segel and we have the emails to prove it, but even if you believe what she says it contains not a hint of any inappropriate touching or even any request for such touching.... There is no way in the world that Bob Weinstein is guilty of sexual harassment, and even if you believed what this person asserts there is no way it would amount to that."
Regardless, Spike TV said it is investigating the alleged inappropriate behaviour.
