The 49-year-old actor, known for roles like Married... with Children and Anchorman, shared the news on Twitter. She explained that she was diagnosed a few months ago.

She wrote, "It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it."

She continued, "As one of my friends that has MS said, 'we wake up and take the indicated action.' And that's what I do. So now I ask for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you xo."

MS is "a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system" [via the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada]. It is rarely fatal and has no known cure. Its symptoms include "extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment and mood changes."

Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. She underwent a double mastectomy and announced that she was cancer-free that same year.
