David Gordon Green's beloved 2018 Halloween film is set to be followed by two sequels — Halloween Kills on October 16, 2020, and Halloween Ends on October 15, 2021. Despite the title of that third film, however, there's one thing we can know for sure — Michael Myers never really dies.
Green made the films with his frequent collaborator Danny McBride. The two also worked on the upcoming HBO show Righteous Gemstones together, and at an Television Critics Association event promoting that series, they opened up about the Halloween franchise, originally created by John Carpenter.
When asked if Halloween Ends is as definitive as its title suggests, McBride implied things are a little more open-ended.
"I think no way and I wouldn't want it [to end]," he said [via Slash Film]. "I feel like Michael Myers is such an iconic horror character, there's a simplicity to why he's scary that I think it will always be relevant for generations to come. I think we're lucky enough to have a shot at it right now. I'm sure 10 years from now there'll be another group of knuckleheads that think they have the answer to what they should do with Michael Myers next."
That said, Green confirmed that Halloween Ends will be his final contribution to the franchise.
"It's just a continuing story that's got a beginning, middle and end. I'm excited to begin it," he said. "The middle is chaos and the ending is very satisfying."
In fact, McBride says the initial plan was to make all three films at once.
"When we first were signed up for it, we were going to originally try to do three movies back-to-back," he said. "Ultimately, we were kind of all like let's make sure we can do this one good. Then when we connected with people, we all decided let's try to continue what we were going to do."
