Disneyland has been closed forever, and at last it's about to reopen in California — but as a massive COVID-19 vaccination site.
On Monday (January 11), officials announced the "happiest place on earth" would become what's being called a super Point-of-Dispensing site for COVID-19 vaccines in Orange County. The site is set to open later this week and will have the capacity to vaccinate thousands of people daily.
"The Disneyland Resort, the largest employer in the heart of Orange County, has stepped up to host the county's first Super POD site – undertaking a monumental task in our vaccination distribution process," acting chairman Andrew Do, First District, said in a statement.
Disneyland has been closed since mid-March, though Disney World in Florida has remained opened in a reduced capacity.
Similar super vaccination sites are set to open this week at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium, Cal Expo in Sacramento and Petco Park in San Diego.
California has seen a frightening surge in COVID-19 cases in recent months. On Monday, the state reported nearly 40,000 new cases and 264 deaths.
