Now that Madame Web has hit theatres, Dakota Johnson's chaotically candid press run surrounding the movie makes sense. Though the actor has always been known for her banter-filled interviews, she's never quite slammed a film she's starred in so immediately. Of course, that's changed now that her foray into the Marvel Sony Cinematic Universe has come to be.
Speaking with Bustle's Charlotte Owen, Johnson tried to predict the headline deriving from their chat. "Like, ‘Dakota Johnson Breaks Her Silence On Madame Web’s F*cking Box Office Failure,'" she said. "It’s like, ‘No, I’m not breaking any silence. I’m just talking.'"
While she said the backlash toward the film didn't surprise her, she still had to figure out whether or not she fits in superhero-adjacent movies. "I had never done anything like [Madame Web] before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now," she explained.
Johnson hinted that this may have been due to elements of Madame Web changing throughout production: "Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing, and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing. Of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand."
She also echoed sentiments she's previously made about the film industry, and the changes in making movies themselves:
It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.
All of this to say, we get where Johnson is coming from. Revisit our 3/10 review of Madame Web.
