One of the biggest appeals of Steven Spielberg's E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial is that it feels small. Sure, it's a blockbuster, but it's just as much of a humble family dramedy about divorce and adolescence. Or at least, it was. Now, the damn thing is a commercial for an enormous telecom company.
Comcast, the parent company of Universal, has exhumed E.T. for a new Xfinity commercial. Basically, Henry Thomas's Elliott character is all grown up, and he's now an upper middle class dad living in a house full of Xfinity gadgets.
E.T. shows up and spends the holidays enjoying myriad Xfinity products with Elliott and his family. Then he decides to leave. It's basically a collection of original E.T. shots that have been redone and crammed full of product placement.
"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts," Thomas said in a statement.
