'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel Reveals Title and First Look at Star-Studded Cast

'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' will hit theatres one year from today

The massively successful Harry Potter film franchise expanded last year, taking things beyond J.K. Rowling's original seven books with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. A star-studded sequel is already in the works, and more details about it have just arrived.

The film is titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and it's slated to hit theatres exactly a year from today on November 16, 2018.

Eddie Redmayne will once again star as Newt Scamander, and Johnny Depp will reprise his cameo from the first film as the titular evil wizard Grindelwald. Jude Law, meanwhile, will make his debut in the magical series as Depp's rival — a young Dumbledore.

Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler and Katherine Waterston will all return as well, joined by other new castmates Zoe Kravitz, Callum Turner and Claudia Kim.

There's no word yet on whether series superfan Drake will get a cameo, though.

A new plot synopsis reads:

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans, Albus Dumbledore (Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The first look at the cast in the upcoming film has arrived, as well. Below, watch a moving photograph of the Fantastic Beasts cast dissolve to reveal the sequel's title.
