The Film Crew: Killers From Space

Fans of long lost, but not forgotten, cult series Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (or MST3K to diehards) can rejoice as three of the creative "geniuses” and, just as importantly, their voices return for the mocking of the "best” that terrible cinema has to offer. While the premise has been altered — instead of being trapped on a spaceship with robots being tormented by an evil scientist, the boys now are blue-collar workers laying down a track for their boss — and the silhouettes are long gone, the hilarity remains. Mike Nelson (or, um, Mike), Kevin Murphy (or Servo) and Bill Corbett (or Crow) haven’t lost a step as they take on Killers From Space, which is, as usual, one of the worst films ever created. The plot is nonsensical, the acting horrible and the special effects atrocious, with the film following a scientist (Peter Graves) who miraculously survives a plane crash and unravels some plot about alien invasion/conquest. However, the crappiness only lends ammunition for the Film Crew to riff on, spewing one-liners, riffing on each other’s comments and generally delivering the entertaining mocking devotees of MST3Khave been missing since the show went off the air after its 11-year run. Still, while the commentary is, as always, entertaining, and the three still work together seamlessly, you’re still watching a terrible movie, a really, really terrible movie that was horrible even by 1954’s standards. For fans of MST3K or anyone who actually likes it when people make smart-ass comments during a screening, it’s good to have some old friends back. If only they had the resources to tackle some of the dreck that has been released in the last decade. Who wouldn’t want to see them take on The Phantom Menace?
