For Your Eyes Only [Blu-Ray]

After Moonraker seriously pissed off many hardcore Bond fans, and greatly amused everyone else, with little men firing lasers in space and a metal-toothed villain named "Jaws,” Broccoli and crew decided to bring Bond back to Earth (quite literally) with the Olympics-inspired For Your Eyes Only. Bond is enlisted to retrieve a lost British code machine that controls missiles, or some such nonsense, and winds up skiing, deep-sea diving, mountain climbing and responding indifferently to coital partners being brutally murdered before his very eyes. With horny teenaged figure skaters — who one can only assume had massive daddy issues, as Roger Moore was visibly well into his 50s at this point — and evil East German target shooters, the cheese factor is high on this adventure. This is only exacerbated by some Sheena Easton grooves, an 8-bit Nintendo score and some ski ballet by an aged Bond, who himself seems more amused by his various struggles than nonplussed or concerned. That said, the action is pretty consistent and tight throughout, keeping many pragmatic questions at bay for the duration of the ride. However, by the time Bond and his blank-eyed gal pal Melina (Carole Bouquet, who strangely doesn’t ride the Bond flesh train until the final reel) reach the mountaintop fortress and throw various baddies off the cliff, very few viewers will remember why they’re even up there in the first place. Blu-Ray includes some stiff and plodding commentary from Sir Roger Moore, who occasionally forgets what movie he’s watching, as well as a narrated "interview clip” commentary from director John Glen and cast members. The "Bond in Greece,” "Bond in Cortina” and "Neptune’s Journey” featurettes explore the various European locations that were used for filming, while the "Inside For Your Eyes Only” featurette discusses how the Bond gang came up with the premise for the film, citing the financial success of Moonraker as a stress indicator. An "Expanded Angle” scene is included as well, where Bond kicks a car off a cliff. He’s that tough.
