Everyone's favourite '50s-themed musical is getting revamped for a new TV series. HBO Max has signed on for a Grease spinoff series to be produced by Paramount Television titled Rydell High — and it will be just as musically abundant as the original film.

While there are few details available on the new series — so far it has no release date, no episode count and no writers — we do know that it will be a reimagining of Grease's classic characters and is set to feature new original music, as well as iconic tunes from the era.

On the series, head of original content at HBO Max, Sarah Aubrey, has issued the following statement:

Grease is an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that works for every generation, and I'm thrilled that our friends at Paramount were excited about the idea of opening up the show and putting it on a larger canvas for a weekly series. This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock'n'roll musical. It's Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs.

Whether that "same spirit" will necessitate the return of John Travolta or Olivia Newton-John or any of the other original cast members is unclear. Either way, Grease is definitely going to be the word again soon.
