The Heartbreak Kid

Top comedy tag-team directors the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb & Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin) turn the romantic comedy genre on its head with The Heartbreak Kid. Not afraid of the dreaded "R” rating, the Farrellys create surprisingly funny situational adult humour without resorting to too many gross out jokes and overly ridiculous scenarios. Perma-bachelor Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller) is questioning his single life when he meets Lila (Malin Akerman). After a whirlwind six-week romance, Lila is offered a job overseas and the couple decide to get married so they can stay together. On their honeymoon, Eddie begins to discover that he may not know his new Bride as well as he thought, especially when he meets the girl of his dreams (Michelle Monaghan) at their Honeymoon resort. The Heartbreak Kid is not highbrow comedy by any stretch of the imagination, relying on sex jokes and slapstick moments for most of its laughs. But the Farrelly Brothers know their business, putting the father/son comedy team of Ben and Jerry Stiller to good use in a number of scenes. The DVD features are a little better than the standard fare, with the usual deleted scenes, commentary by the Farrellys and gag reel augmented by an interesting interview with the Farrelly Brothers discussing how they got into the film industry, a father/son interview with Ben and Jerry Stiller, a short feature about the crew Halloween party and an odd documentary about the crew’s egg toss competition. The Heartbreak Kid is a solid Farrelly Brothers comedy that will surely please fans and amuse comedy audiences. It might not be on par with the Brothers’ most famous films, like Dumb & Dumber or There’s Something About Mary, but it’s much more enjoyable than Me, Myself & Irene or Stuck On You. The Heartbreak Kid won't break your heart.
