After first launching a new era of Star Wars films with The Force Awakens in 2015, J.J. Abrams will return to the franchise to write and direct the currently untitled Star Wars: Episode IX.

As Lucasfilm notes, Abrams will co-write Episode IX with Chris Terrio. Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot and Lucasfilm will produce the film.

"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.

The next instalment in the current trilogy is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which will arrive in theatres December 15. Earlier this year, Abrams said he thinks Mark Hamill will win an Oscar for his performance in the forthcoming film.
