Kenny vs Spenny: Season Four

The extremes Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice go to in order to top each other will one day reach the point where one of them gets arrested, dies in an horribly shameful way or god forbid, the creative well running dry. But their run so far has seen the two best friends and better enemies hilariously push the envelope with their cutthroat competitions, leaving no room for humility or integrity, making a habit of humiliating each other at any cost. Now big shots after getting picked up in the U.S. by Comedy Central, thanks to their friendship with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the guys admirably stick to their Canadian roots, keeping the production north of the border in Toronto. The fourth season finds the duo upping the ante yet again, mixing the inane and repulsive with some practical challenges. They visit a local strip joint to ultimately see who can suppress an erection the longest, Kenny eats some serious chilli and shoves a tube up his arse to achieve maximum flatulence, they tie themselves to goats for an entire three days,and see who can sing the longest without stopping, an episode even they admit is their most annoying yet (they are correct). Not all of the stunts work out according to plan, largely thanks to Kenny; he gets food poisoning when he goes hard at the meat-eating face-off (including devouring a massive cow tongue) and gets arrested when they square off to see who can commit the most crimes (his arrest is not that impressive, however). It’s these genuine, spontaneous moments that help balance Kenny’s same old conniving tricks, which are becoming rote at this point. The two-disc set is stacked with extras, including bonus footage like "Who can pick the bigger booger?” and Kenny answering fan mail with little discretion. Alternative versions of a couple episodes appear to mean "censored for American television,” as the only difference I can tell is the bleeping of all their naughty words. And a selection of deleted scenes seems familiar, with the exception of a weighed down and debilitated Spenny peeing into a bag, spilling it all over the floor, which is a good, cheap laugh. Kenny and Spenny also reflect on each episode, for what feels like a Comedy Central stunt, but it’s kind of interesting to get an abridged take instead of a full-length commentary.
