Kevin Smith Is Making a 'Green Hornet' Animated Series

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has teamed up with family entertainment company WildBrain to create a new animated series based on the Green Hornet.

The series will centre on the original Green Hornet's son and the daughter of his crime-fighting partner, Kato, who will no longer be "just a sidekick, but now a strong female partner to the Green Hornet," according to Stephanie Betts of WildBrain.

Smith — who is also busy promoting his latest film, Killroy Was Here, running his newly launched pop-up restaurant Mooby's and tying up loose ends on his Mallrats sequel — will be discussing the new project on his YouTube series Fatman Beyond tonight at 11 p.m. ET. The filmmaker has previously written numerous Green Hornet and Kato comics for Dynamite Entertainment.

Here's what he said about the partnership with WildBrain:

It's an honour to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters. We'll be telling a tale of two Hornets — past and future — that spans generations and draws inspiration from a lifetime spent watching classic cartoons and amazing animation like Batman: The Animated Series, Heavy Metal and Super Friends. I can't believe WildBrain gave me this job and I can't thank them enough for the opportunity to extend my childhood a little longer.

George W. Trendle's original Green Hornet first aired as a radio series back in the '30s. Back in 2011, Seth Rogen starred in the titular role for the live-action film iteration.
