Following reports of his potential involvement earlier this month, Mads Mikkelsen has now been confirmed to replace Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise.
The Danish actor will take Depp's role as dark wizard Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3, which is currently in production for an expected release in the summer of 2022. Initial reports said Mikkelsen was director David Yates' first choice to step into the role.
In early November, Depp shared that he was asked by Warner Bros. to resign following a court case concerning his marriage to Amber Heard, in which British newspaper The Sun alleged him to be a "wife beater." Depp tried to sue The Sun for libel and lost the case, leading to his departure from the franchise.
Fantastic Beasts 3 will follow the franchise's second instalment, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which arrived in 2018.
