Dolores Avery — the mother of Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery — has died. Today Steven Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner announced the sad news, revealing Dolores passed away this morning. She was 83.

In a statement to TMZ, Steven said, "Losing my parents before I got out has always been my worst nightmare. Now it has happened. I worry my Dad will not live to see me as a free man. Today I lost the person I most wanted to take care of and give a better life when I am freed. I cannot put in words the pain of losing my mom."
Dolores was prominently featured in the hit Netflix true crime hit during its first two seasons and was a constant pillar of support for her accused son.

Steven's brother Earl told TMZ that Dolores had been in hospice care for three weeks battling dementia before her death. According to Earl, Steven last spoke to his mother about eight or nine months ago as he remains in prison.

Making the news that much more tragic, Steven will celebrate his 59th birthday tomorrow (July 9).
