Matt Smith is the latest star to join forces with, uh, the Force. He has been cast in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX.

It's unclear exactly what role he will be playing, or whether he will be on the side of the Rebels or the Empire.

Best known for his previous roles on Doctor Who and The Crown, Smith joins a cast of returning names like Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, as well as other newbies like Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan and Naomi Ackie.

Original Star Wars cast members Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniel and Billy Dee Williams will reprise their roles as Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and Lando Calrissian, respectively.

Carrie Fisher will also appear as Princess Leia, though her onscreen appearances will consist of unused footage shot during Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She passed away in 2016 at the of 60.

The project will be helmed by The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams and marks the follow-up to 2017's The Last Jedi.
