Already the co-owner of a Welsh football club, Ryan Reynolds is reportedly looking to expand his pro sports portfolio with a purchase of the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators.
A report Wednesday (November 2) from People cites a source sharing that Reynolds is "very interested" in acquiring the NHL franchise in the nation's capital, one of seven teams based in Canada. People's report follows a preliminary report of the team's potential sale published this week (November 1) by Sportico.
People's source is cited as saying, "it is important to Reynolds the team stay in Ottawa" — music to the ears of a fanbase that has long been subject to relocation rumblings, whether due to bankruptcy or brash threats (that were eventually walked back) from former team ownership.
People also points to Reynolds responding to a Senators fan on Twitter with an emoji that appears to indicate interest, but that's a little too thin to hang this report on.
What makes People's report more promising is further detail from the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch, a longtime Senators reporter who writes in a respective story that Reynolds' interest in buying the team is "real" and "genuine."
Citing sources, Garrioch writes, "The belief is Reynolds feels like there's a good opportunity to have success with the Senators. Even if he's not the majority owner, it would make sense for Reynolds to be involved with whoever purchases the majority share of the franchise."
Last year, Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney purchased Wrexham AFC, and chronicled their involvement with FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.
Longtime Senators owner Eugene Melnyk passed away in March after a lengthy illness, leaving the team to his two daughters, Anna and Olivia. At present, a board of directors currently runs the franchise on the Melnyk family's behalf.
