Scary Movie

Keenen Ivory Wayans

"Scary Movie" is bad through and through. It sets out to lampoon the recent genre of self-aware, self-referential teen horror flicks, in particular "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Unfortunately, unlike "Scream," which actually had some valid and interesting comments about the horror movies it at once mocked and paid homage to, "Scary Movie" has virtually nothing to say about the movies it takes on. Instead, it is so lazy in its execution that it merely relies on recounting scenes from the films that it is trying to spoof practically verbatim, only straying to throw in some lame, puerile jokes that are invariably sexist, homophobic and/or just plain stupid. High satire it isn't, but it also doesn't achieve the kind of gross-out humour that can be such a guilty pleasure. The jokes are too obvious and the movie ends up just being boring and feeling much longer than its 85 minutes. The Wayans brothers seem primarily to blame for this garbage, with Keenen Ivory Wayans serving as director, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans starring and being among the writers (this film has six credited writers, which boggles the mind when considering how terrible the script is). There is really nothing redeeming or interesting about "Scary Movie." The trailers and commercials actually feature the best jokes of the bad, bad lot, so chances are most people have already seen more than anyone needs to of this film.
