Scream VI is a slasher sequel that plays by new rules

It's not an easy feat to continue a long-running, well-loved franchise and still win over audiences both old and new, but that's exactly what Scream VI is sharping up to do. It scares, it surprises and it thrills, all while still maintaining the iconic Scream slasher factor. Right off the bat, the film takes viewers by surprise — and from then on out, the kills and chases are heightened at every turn.

The film picks up a year after the last movie, with sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega), who are still reeling from the last time masked murderer Ghostface tried to kill them. Now, they have moved to New York City with Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding). There are also new friends in the mix: Ethan (Jack Champion), Anika (Devyn Nekoda), Quinn (Liana Liberato) and Danny (Josh Segarra).

When Ghostface strikes again, they all become suspects. In a very memorable and well-written scene, Mindy breaks down the new rules of a franchise, as the old rule don't apply now. It's one of the best scenes in the film, and very much an ode to Randy recounting the rules of how to survive a slasher movie in the original Scream: the legacy characters don't matter, and neither do the main characters.

White other Scream films survived on a killer reveal in the final act, Scream VI flips the script and makes the first and second act a wild ride. The chases, the dialogue, and the twists and turns are all satisfying, and set this film apart from its predecessor.

The film's ending, however, doesn't offer quite the same payoff, with a final reveal that feels rushed and less thrilling. This wouldn't usually go over well with a Scream fan, but the fact that the entire ride felt fresh, unexpected and wild made it easier to forget the flaws.

Anyone who loved the original Wes Craven Scream films will notice Neve Campbell's absence, and it's a shame to carry on the franchise without its legacy character — but the young actors sure do pull it off. This film, while aimed at the next gen, is still clever and creative, which will keep OG fans happy.

Barrera, Ortega, Brown and Gooding are truly the core four who keep viewers invested in their journey. Despite being fresh faces in this franchise, they feel like legacy characters in their own right.

Scream VI isn't afraid to stab the old rules and offer new elements to the beloved franchise and will invite returning fans and new viewers to dig into the high-stakes Ghostface chases.
