Brown coats rejoice! Joss Whedon’s feature film resurrection of prematurely cancelled beloved cult television phenomenon Firefly has arrived in this much-deserved collector’s edition. Picking up the intrepid plot threads, Serenity weaves a unique experience more than capable of standing on its own as a sci-fi masterpiece. Creatively blending elements of a depression-era western with space adventure and infusing it with insightful social satire and rustic nobility, the film follows the titular ship and its crew as they enter territory far more dangerous than on their average smuggling mission. Fugitives River and Simon Tam’s presence on the ship has made finding work for Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew more than a little difficult, with the Alliance constantly on their trail. The decision to dump their burden is put on hold when River goes ballistic in a bar (in one of the film’s most gorgeous fight-scenes) after muttering the word "Miranda.” Despite the peril, Mal and company, left with few options, decide to risk getting to the bottom of the government conspiracy centring on River and the mutilated, rage-driven cannibals known as Reavers. Expanding upon the original DVD’s already impressive special features, director/writer Whedon understands better than anyone the hunger his audience has. There are new extended scenes that flesh out some of the character relationships and plot points that had to be slimmed to effectively tell the story. "Take a Walk on Serenity” is a guided tour through the newly built film version of the ship, with plenty of goofy mugging. The crowing jewels of this special edition package though are "A Filmmaker’s Journey,” brimming with "behind the scenes” footage and cast and crew interviews, as well as the commentary with Whedon, Nathan Fillion (Mal), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Summer Glau (River) and Ron Glass (Shepard Book). The love and respect these people have for each other, their characters and the story are touching and positively infectious. Their interaction is hilarious, informative and sure to ignite hope that this isn’t the absolute end of this wonderful family and universe.
