Thanks to a financial disagreement between Disney and Sony, it appears that Spider-Man will be exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Disney (who own Marvel) and Sony (who own the film rights to Spider-Man) were unable to come to an agreement as to how much money each side should make from future Spider-Man films, according to Deadline.
Sony reportedly wanted to maintain the current agreement where Marvel receives approximately five percent of first-dollar gross (opening day box office revenue), while Disney wanted to split it 50/50. Both studios turned down the other offer, resulting in the end of their partnership.
The star and director of the two latest Spider-Man movies — Tom Holland and Jon Watts, respectively — have reportedly signed for two more films. With this new arrangement in place, Marvel will no longer have any involvement in said films, which will mean no appearances by other MCU characters. Conversely, there go the chances of seeing Peter Parker show up in future MCU films.
Sony bought the film rights to Spider-Man from Marvel in 1998, which led to the Tobey Maguire-led trilogy of films in the 2000s and the two-film Andrew Garfield reboot series in the early 2010s. Disney and Sony struck an agreement to share the film rights in 2015, leading to the new MCU version of Spider-Man played by Holland.
The latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, was released earlier this summer. It was the sequel to 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland's Peter Parker also appeared in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
