Sturgill Simpson is a crossover alt-country star, and now he's crossing over into the world of anime as well. He has just announced a new album with an accompanying anime film, both titled Sound & Fury.
The album will be out this fall on Elektra Records, while the film will come out simultaneously on Netflix. The film is written and directed by Junpei Mizusaki with character design by Takashi Okazaki. It's based on a story by Simpson himself.
Simpson announced Sound & Fury at the San Diego Comic-Con and shared a trailer. Watch that teaser at the bottom of this page.
Of the self-produced album, Simpson said:
We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock'n'roll record. It's definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest. I had this idea that it'd be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film.
Sound & Fury will be Simpson's first full-length since his Grammy-winning album A Sailor's Guide to Earth from 2016.
