After plenty of delays and false starts, New Zealand director Taika Waititi and producer Leonardo DiCaprio are powering ahead with the live-action Akira remake. While we've still got some reservations about whether or not it will actually be good, the movie now has a release date.

The film has been dated to arrive on May 21, 2021 — the same release date as John Wick: Chapter 4

The film was fast-tracked into production after receiving an $18.5 million USD tax credit from the state of California. That was the largest credit handed out among the 18 films recently treated to credits.

"We are thrilled with the opportunity to shoot Akira in California," Ravi Mehta, Warner Bros' executive VP of physical production and finance, previously said. "The availability of top-notch crew members, plus the wide variety of location choices and predictable weather are second to none."

The casting for the live-action Akira has not yet been announced.
