After numerous attempts to bring the stories from book to screen this past decade, Jeff Smith's celebrated comic series Bone has finally found a home at Netflix.
As Deadline reports, the streaming giant has secured the rights to Smith's comic for development as an animated kids series. Bone was originally published from 1991 to 2004 in 55 irregularly released issues.
"I've waited a long time for this," Smith said in a statement. "Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter-by-chapter and book-by-book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world."
The film rights to Bone had previously been acquired by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2008, though multiple attempts to write a film adaptation subsequently failed. In 2016, the studio announced that Mark Osborne had been hired to direct an animated adaptation, which would have been the first film of a planned trilogy.
Bone follows cousins Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone, who find themselves on a quest to save inhabitants of a mysterious valley after being run out of their hometown of Boneville.
An expected release date for the animated series has yet to be announced.
