Though he's been working since 2000, writer and director Sean Baker emerged as a prestigious awards-season contender with 2015's Tangerine. Now, in 2017, he's back with The Florida Project, a spiritual sequel of sorts.

Like its predecessor, the new film pairs eye-popping, saturated colour with a warm, gritty, humorous and ultimately heartbreaking look at some of society's least fortunate people.

The film centres on Moonee, a young girl living in a seedy Florida hotel with her unemployed mother (Bria Vinaite) and a cast of similarly disadvantaged residents. Impoverished and undisciplined, Moonee and her friends wreak havoc on the motel, creating a world of chaos for the endlessly patient manager (and unintended patriarch) Bobby (Willem Dafoe).

The Florida Project explores harsh realities about economic inequality without judging its subjects. It's also packed with humour, warmth and beauty, positioning itself alongside George Washington and Moonlight as a film that we'll be talking about for decades to come.
