Robert Eggers' The Witch terrified audiences on the festival circuit last year, with many declaring it a modern horror classic. In our review, we called it a "graceful, hauntingly stylish thriller." Now, the film has gotten the best endorsement possible for a horror movie — a seal of approval from the Satanic Temple.
As Indiewire points out, the organization has dubbed The Witch "a transformative Satanic experience," adding that it will usher in a "new Satanic era."
In a press release, The Satanic Temple's Jex Blackmore said, "We are empowered by the narrative of The Witch: a story of pathological pride, oldworld religious paradigms, and an outsider who grabs persecution by the horns."
Further, he praised the way that the film "departs from the victim narrative" that often surrounds witchcraft stories, adding that the film is a "declaration of feminine independence."
Leading up to the film's wide release on February 19, the Satanic Temple will host screenings and events surrounding The Witch in New York, Los Angeles, Austin and Detroit. More information on those screenings is available here.
