Trailer Park Boys: The Complete Sixth Season

Though it’s now been on the air for several years and has developed a national following, not much has really changed for the characters of Trailer Park Boys. Ricky and Julian continue to develop greasy game plans, usually involving stolen barbecues or growing weed, Lahey is always drunk out of his mind on suspicion and rum, and poor Bubbles just tries to keep his head while raising his kittens. This sixth season isn’t much different in the plot department either, though it is the first time where a season doesn’t end with Ricky and Julian sitting in prison. In fact, Lahey rejoins the police force and the boys actually come to an understanding with him, leaving everything incredibly optimistic at the end of this shortened season. And it’s a good note to end on because Trailer Park Boys deserves to celebrate, as the show becomes increasingly cleverer, both with the loose script and the way the series is filmed. One can notice how the cameras are now completely steady, for the most part (as opposed to the very shaky documentary style of seasons past), and the crew even come up with new ways to shoot their beloved subjects. The greatest thing about Trailer Park Boys is that, six seasons in, they still continue to tap into that small town Canadian lifestyle, which includes a salute to plastic milk jugs filled with piss thanks to someone spotting an actual news report about how "piss jugs” were surfacing on the side of Halifax highways — the actual news footage is added to this DVD. Other highlights include the usual extended takes and deleted scenes but like every other adlibbed sit-com, these are usually tedious to watch, as there seems to be a never-ending supply of cutting room material. More interesting segments are how this season was tackled after shooting the feature film and a tour with the show’s soundman, Mike O’Neill from the Inbreds. Compared to past seasons, this DVD doesn’t offer anything new, in terms of extras, but the continuously great quality of the show more than makes up for it.
