Universal Pictures Commits to 'Pacific Rim 2' in New Statement

Earlier this month, fans of Pacific Rim were disappointed to learn that Guillermo Del Toro's second film in the series had been indefinitely shelved. While it was thought that the movie might be cancelled in full, Universal Pictures have now confirmed that it will eventually come out.

In a statement, the company confirmed that the film is certainly delayed, but they're still committed to bringing it out at some point:

Legendary's Pacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time. The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

Guillermo del Torro will release his new film Crimson Peak next month. He recently told Variety that his next film will be (in Variety's words) "a small, independently financed movie that he is keeping under tight wraps." In other words, he's got plenty on his plate before he gets around to the next Pacific Rim film.
