Following a failed attempt at bringing comic scribe Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man to the big screen, the chromosomally challenged sci-fi story is now reportedly being redeveloped as a television series for FX.
Though it's not been confirmed by FX proper, The Hollywood Reporter writes that the comic book series creator is attached to the TV project, along with Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. A search for a writer is also apparently underway. It should be noted that the property is only in the development stage, with no firm date around an expected release.
Written and created by Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man ran 60 issues through DC Comics' Vertigo imprint between 2002 and 2008. It centered on the character of Yorick Brown, the last human man alive following a plague epidemic that killed millions. The series followed "Y" and his pet capuchin monkey, Ampersand, travelling around trying to solve the mystery as to why the rest of the male population dwindled.
New Line Cinema had initially optioned the Y: The Last Man story in 2007, bringing David Goyer, Carl Ellsworth and director D.J. Caruso onboard for a movie adaptation. Development apparently stalled when it was undecided whether to proceed as a two-hour stand-alone film or an extended three-part arc.
Talk of the flick was renewed in 2012, but fell apart in 2014 when Vaughan announced that the rights were reverting back to him.
In addition to plotting comics like Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and his current project, Saga, Vaughan has done TV work on Under the Dome and Lost.
