Pedro Morelli's mind-fuck of a comedy, Zoom, is simultaneously hilarious, bizarre, culturally conscious and cleverly constructed. It starts with a self-conscious animator and sex-doll artist (Allison Pill) vengefully shrinking the size of her comic book creation's (Gael Garcia Bernal) penis after a breast augmentation surgery leaves her feeling awkward and objectified. Mirroring her struggle for superficial validation is the story of a supermodel (Mariana Ximenes) trying to write a novel so she can be desired for more than her looks.
The clincher: her novel is about the sex-doll artist and her story is being directed by the comic book character with a micro-penis. It all blends together into a fascinating tapestry about the nature of desire and self-perception, as well as the delicate equilibrium that is identity.
