A Tribe Called Quest put a cap on their career as a group this past month with We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, though more new music will soon be on the way with a posthumous solo release from late group member Phife Dawg.
This past Saturday (November 19) marked New York City's renaming of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street as Malik "Phife Dawg" Taylor Way. During an interview before the unveiling, Phife Dawg's widow Deisha Head Taylor revealed a full solo LP from the late MC would arrive early in the new year.
"His solo album will be out probably sometime during the first quarter of 2017. We're working on it now," she told reporters [via Okayplayer]. "He completed his entire solo album before he transitioned, so we're excited about releasing that."
News of the record follows the release of solo single "Nutshell," which was released for charity back in April. The J Dilla-produced track was set to appear on a record titled Give Thanks. As previously reported, the title of Muttymorphosis has also been floated for the Phife Dawg solo album, which had been described by the rapper before his death as "basically my life story."
Back in 2000, he released his only previous solo album Ventilation: Da LP.
Phife Dawg passed away in March of this year following complications from diabetes. He was 45 years old.
