On July 12, employees of the infidelity-oriented website Ashley Madison were thunderstruck when they logged onto their computers to discover that the company had been hacked. Now, it has been revealed that the hackers gave their break-in its own special soundtrack: "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC.
That song was apparently cued up automatically when workers at Ashley Madison's parent company Avid Life Media logged in and read a message from their hackers. The song's lyrics describe getting caught on the railroad tracks after a wild night with some exotic dancers. (To take the metaphor one step further, the hackers evidently played the role of the train in this scenario.)
Journalists who attended a Toronto press conference about the hack yesterday (August 24) were given a copy of the lyrics from the 1990 hit. Of course, AC/DC don't have any personal connection to the hack (that we're aware of), but "Thunderstuck" is certainly a very defiant, badass anthem for the hackers' shenanigans.
The hackers dubbed themselves the Impact Group. They broke into Ashely Madison's servers and shared gigabytes' worth of private user data, including phone numbers, email addresses and even some credit card information. Two suicides have since been attributed to the leaked information, and Avid Life Media has offered a $500,000 reward to any information that leads to the prosecution of the hackers.
