Adam Baldwin

'No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five)' (album stream)

Adam Baldwin might be known to some for his work in Matt Mays' band, but the musician from Dartmouth, NS, is stepping out solo with his debut full-length next week. Before No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five) officially arrives, though, you can give it an exclusive early listen.

The nostalgically titled record was primarily inspired by Toronto's vibrant autumn last year, when the city was alight with a passionate electorate and ecstatic Blue Jays fans, though the title track itself is set in the year before Baldwin himself was born. It seeks to draw comparisons between then and now — focusing on the particularly sad fact that, at least in terms of American politics, not much has really changed.

Besides addressing issues south of the border, Baldwin hits closer to home with a song about the death of Rehtaeh Parsons in 2013, and the systemic flaws that allowed the young girl's life to end so tragically.

More personal, introspective emotions are explored too, particularly on a pair of songs featuring July Talk's Leah Fay. "Anytime" captures the hopes and fears associated with young love, while the follow-up "Sparrow Song" hears those fears taking over and becoming reality.

It's a poignant musical journey through the modern world from one man's perspective, giving listeners a glimpse into Baldwin's own experience.

No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five) lands on June 24 through Sonic Records, but you can give it a premature spin in the player below. Scroll past Baldwin's upcoming live shows to hear it right now.
