Onetime Apollo Ghosts/COOL TV frontman Adrian Teacher recently revealed a single called "Cruis'n USA" with his band the Subs. It turns out this song was part of a larger project, since the Vancouver trio just surprise-released a new album called Anxious Love.
The characteristically quick and snappy album by Adrian Teacher & the Subs clocks in at just nine songs in 19 minutes. But while it's filled with jangly, upbeat guitar and breezy hooks, the record touches on some fairly weighty subjects.
In an announcement, Teacher wrote, "A couple of years ago, my drummer Amanda got sick, and then she got better. Then my dad got sick, and he's not really going to get better. So I wrote these songs as I was thinking about this, and a lot of other things too."
The digital-only Anxious Love was recorded with David Carswell (Destroyer, the New Pornographers, Tegan and Sara) at Vancouver's JC/DC Studios. Karl Blau plays saxophone and Nicholas Krgovich contributes piano. The cover artwork is by local Vancouver comedian/songwriter Aaron Read.
While most of the album touches on a similar atmospheric indie rock sound as 2016's Terminal City, "He Found Beauty and Goodness Everywhere and in Everyone" is a beautifully wonky ambient synth instrumental, "So Choked" in horn-bolstered funk, and closer "Can't Fight Love" is a lo-fi acoustic ballad.
