Cincinnati's favourite alt-rock gentlemen, the Afghan Whigs, have announced their return. Following a 13-year layover, the Greg Dulli-led outfit will take the stage at least twice next year, with the appearances taking place at All Tomorrow's Parties events on both side of the pond.
According to a press sheet, first up for the reunited act is a headlining slot on the third day of ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror event at London's Alexandra Palace. The May 27 show was originally to feature Guided By Voices as the final act, but the band had to bow out of the performance for personal reasons, so the soul-tinged Whigs have been brought in as a replacement.
"My wife Deborah [Higgins] adores this band," ATP founder Barry Hogan told Spin. "When we first started dating she would always say we had to get the Afghan Whigs to play for us. I used to love going to see them. They always sounded great, put 110 percent into their performances... We are truly honored that they chose I'll Be Your Mirror UK to be their first ever show and Greg curating the next U.S. edition is something we have always dreamed of."
Joining the group onstage that night are fellow '90s vets Archers of Loaf, as well as Yuck and Siskiyou. Other bands appearing that weekend include the Melvins and thrashers Slayer, who will perform Reign In Blood in full.
If you can't make it out to the UK, the Whigs will also be playing an I'll Be Your Mirror event in Asbury Park, NJ. Dulli, who is also currently fronting the Twilight Singers, will curate the entire event. A list of acts has yet to be unveiled, but the whole thing goes down September 21 to 23.
The Afghan Whigs formed in 1986 and released six full-length albums, including their critically acclaimed 1993 set Gentlemen, that packaged darkly passionate, distortion-laced bursts with Dulli's sexual swagger before imploding in 1999.
