Akron/Family Sign to Dead Oceans

The freaky folkies of Akron/Family have jumped ship and left Young God for a new label home at Dead Oceans. The Secretly Canadian affiliate will release the group's yet-untitled follow-up to last year's Love Is Simple in April 2009, Dead Oceans has announced, as well as give audiences the first taste of Akron/Family as a pared-down trio.

"There were other record labels that we liked, but Dead Oceans/Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar was our number one first choice. It was really exciting that they were interested in us," the band's Miles Seaton told Billboard.

As far as what fans can expect from the forthcoming new album, Seaton said to be prepared for something different. "I wouldn't say out of the box we sound like a whole new band, but there's a couple of extreme elements on this record," he said. "There's one track that emphasizes our fondness for extreme noise and painful, almost guttural sounds - raw, primal noise. We've alluded to those things, but I think there are a few moments that are mashing all those sounds together, into hopefully, one seven-minute prog masterpiece."

Akron/Family are currently editing and mixing the new album in Quebec and have a handful of U.S. dates left in 2008, with more expected in the new year.

Here are the band's tour stops so far:

12/28 Boston, MA -€“ TT the Bears
12/29 Burlington, VT -€“ Higher Ground
12/31 New York, NY -€“ The Knitting Factory
