Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard Announces Debut Solo Album 'Jaime'

She's also shared the new song "History Repeats" and will play Toronto on a North American tour

Known for her work with Thunderbitch and Bermuda Triangle outside of her frontwoman duties with Alabama Shakes, Brittany Howard has now announced a new solo effort under her own name.

Howard will release her debut solo album Jaime on September 20 through ATO Records. Eleven tracks in length, the full-length is titled after Howard's sister, who taught her to play piano and write poetry, and who died of cancer when they were still teenagers.

"The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being," Howard explained in a statement. "But, the record is not about her. It's about me. I'm pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own."

Howard recorded Jaime after a cross-country drive that took her from Nashville to Topanga, CA. She then brought a handful of finished material to the Los Angeles studio of engineer Shawn Everett, where she fleshed the material out further with a band including Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Nate Smith and keyboard wizard Robert Glasper.

A first taste of the album arrives today with "History Repeats," which you can hear below. Howard says it "is as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species. Our times of success may propel us forward, but our repeating failures hold us back from evolving into harmony."

Howard has also mapped out an accompanying tour, which features a lone Canadian stop at Toronto's Rebel on September 22. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday (June 28) at 10 a.m. local time, unless otherwise noted. Find her itinerary below.
