Alex Cuba

'Lo Único Constante' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 31, 2017

Smithers, BC-based Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba is about to follow up 2015's Healer with a new album titled Lo Único Constante, and Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive early listen to the record in its entirety.

The new set of songs hears Cuba digging into his roots and revisiting the musical styles of his childhood. It was inspired by the filin movement (derived from the English word "feeling"), which rose to prominence in the 1940s with its rich blend of Cuban trova and American jazz and soul.

"This album pays tribute to all of the great songwriters, musicians, and singers of the filin movement of Cuba, to which I was exposed through my father, Valentin Puentes," Cuba tells Exclaim! "I learned from this movement to create music without superficiality, and that is what Lo Único Constante is all about. Reaching the heart with totally honesty and nakedness."

You can hear that vulnerability and openness shine through in Cuba's latest offering right now — just hit play below.

Lo Único Constante is officially out on April 7 via Caracol Records/Fontana North, and you'll also be able to hear Cuba pitching in on Fred Penner's upcoming album Hear the Music as of April 21.
