Scottish producer Alex Smoke (aka Alex Menzies) switches from Soma to his own imprint, Hum+Haw, with his third full-length release, Lux. Immersed in classical music at a young age, Smoke grew up singing in a youth choir for four years and gained classical music training in cello and piano. His educational background, combined with his innovative production methods, has made him an essential and unique addition to minimal techno. Moving to his label has allowed Smoke the freedom to develop his artistic vision, making Lux his most experimental release to date. On "Pilk," Smoke obscures genres by weaving melodic classical harmonies together with densely textured techno. "Northwoods" is beautifully constructed, with tightly woven arpeggios, moody orchestral strings and rhythmic bells. "Lux+" is a bass-driven track that incorporates Smoke's haunting, muffled vocals. This is another notable release from Alex Smoke, who excels at combining a wide range of influences that go beyond the scope of minimal. His lush and textured tracks are undeniably infectious and inventive, and he remains at the top as a true electronic visionary.
