Dubbed this year's favourites, British pop rock crew alt-J have won this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize. The announcement came today (November 1) from the Roundhouse in London, awarding the band the coveted prize for their An Awesome Wave.

The award honours the year's best album from the UK and Ireland, and this year alt-J beat out nominees such as Jessie Ware, Michael Kiwanuka, the Maccabees, Plan B, Field Music and Richard Hawley.

Along with some serious bragging rights — and no doubt a boost in album sales — alt-J will get £20,000 (about $30,000 Canadian).

Last year, PJ Harvey won the prize for her album Let England Shake.
