American Princes

There’s no question that Other People is a rock record, but American Princes’ other musical influences — possibly the titular other people — are definitely meant to be heard. The Little Rock, AR quintet worked with Wu-Tang and Peter Bjorn and John producer Chuck Brody on their third release, expanding their horizons beyond the expected rock riffs. But that’s not to say that distorted guitars aren’t present. If they’re what you want to hear, check out "Kid Incinerator,” complete with accompanying raspy vocals. And on the other end of the spectrum there’s the ’80s-inspired "Watch As They Go.” David Slade’s voice sounds just as perfect when it’s smooth, and the bass-driven song even has some sing-along-worthy backing vocals. It’s not often that genres and decades can be mixed to create a cohesive sounding record, but American Princes manage to do it while still retaining Other People’s roots. They may not be real rock royalty but they can wear their moniker with pride.
