Following Chris Reimer's tragic passing in 2012, Calgary's Quickdraw Animation Society began to assemble an animated tribute to the late Women guitarist (and Dodos collaborator). The project has been in the works since 2013, and now it's finally ready, with the unveiling set to take place at this year's Sled Island festival.
The film is titled Dude, That's Insane: A Tribute to Chris Reimer. It features contributions from 17 different animation artists, including Chad VanGaalen (who signed onto the project in 2014). The soundtrack is made up of Reimer's unreleased ambient music and was compiled by Morgan Greenwood (who had collaborated with Reimer in the band Azeda Booth).
A press release calls Dude, That's Insane a "freewheeling, patchwork project that is at times irreverent and anarchic, and also meditative and reflective." Ultimately, it amounts to "a celebration of the power of art to inspire creativity."
The short film will make its Calgary premiere at Commonwealth on June 22. The screening will be at 6:30 p.m., ahead of the Montreal music documentary A City Is an Island (which features Mac DeMarco, Patrick Watson, Colin Stetson, Tim Hecker, Sean Nicholas Savage and more).
Dude, That's Insane was paid for with the help of a successful crowdfunding campaign.
