Screenwriter Sacha Gervasi used to be best known as the writer of the big-budget Hollywood flick The Terminal, but last year he directed a documentary about Canadian metal band Anvil. The story of struggling 50-something rockers still chasing the dream of superstardom, Anvil! The Story of Anvil struck a chord with viewers, earning it countless rave reviews and eventually an impressive 98-percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Well, the film's biggest achievement may still be yet to come.
Yesterday (October 8), the movie was reportedly sent out as the first screener to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, meaning that it has a strong chance of being nominated at this year's Oscars. Gervasi spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the honour, saying, ""Our point, I think, is just to get the movie out to as many people as possible. Obviously we're a wild card. The Anvil story is about being the underdog."
Of course, this isn't Anvil's only recent taste of success. On Monday (October 5), the aging metalheads were featured on Nightline and on Tuesday (October 6) they appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brian. Then on Wednesday (October 7), they headed over to the set of director Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet (starring Seth Rogan) to make a cameo appearance in the film, according to Times. Oh, and don't forget being hand-picked by AC/DC to open up their shows this summer.
Not bad, considering that the film is essentially about their failure to live up to the success of their heavy metal peers.
