Aphex Twin Answers Interview Questions from Caribou, Nicolas Jaar, Hot Chip

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 31, 2014

2014 marked the triumphant return of UK electronic export Aphex Twin (a.k.a. Richard D. James) with the release of Syro back in September. The musician has since kept busy, offering up rarities and experimenting with hi-tech musical mutation.

To cap off the year, James participated in a Q&A for Groove that wrangled together an impressive roster of electronic musicians to pose the questions.

Caribou inquired about James' ambition ("I'm trying to do the best thing imaginable — that's my ambition. And I try this by making music"), while Nicolas Jaar got a little more supernatural, asking: "Have you ever had a ghost, a spirit or an accident speak directly to you through making music or while making music?"

Oddly enough, James responded with a 'yes,' though it might be the drugs talking: "Yeah, I always felt a presence or something, I don't know what it is, maybe it's just a human condition, but it always feels like the gods are looking on us and are like: 'Ah, let's make him do this'. And it's really weird, because the other day I got stoned and went to bed, and I had the biggest intense feeling of someone watching over me."

Other featured interviewers include Miss Kittin, Hot Chip and a bonus question from Skrillex, who asked if he could come over and drive James' tank. The answer was another resounding 'yes,' with the reassurance that it still works despite being 60 years old — though, "It's still at my sister's house in Wales."
