Ashtabula

Possible Smokestacks

BY Sean PalmerstonPublished Sep 1, 2000

Possible Smokestacks represents the second release by former Strapping Fieldhands leader Bob Malloy's newest act, Ashtabula. Malloy's new band is a quartet not completely unlike the Fieldhands; their musical output is most reminiscent of late '60s garage and psychedelia, much in the same way that Canada's own Elevator is. Songs swirl in and out, thanks in part to the hypnotic organ playing of Cactus Polyphony (one of the greatest aliases I have heard in a long-time) and the great heavy drumming of Ed Farnsworth, who also keeps time in the current American kings of psychedelia, Bardo Pond.
