Autopsy

Macabre Eternal

BY Denise FalzonPublished May 28, 2011

Following last year's The Tomb Within (the EP that resurrected Autopsy from their 15-year hiatus), the masters of American death metal/gore-grind are back with their much-anticipated new album, Macabre Eternal. The effort is Autopsy's first full-length in 16 years and features the original trio of Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler, who are joined by bassist Joe Trevisano (ex-Abscess). While The Tomb Within was okay, at best, the San Francisco Bay Area legends surpass expectations with Macabre Eternal. The album is the return to form The Tomb Within wasn't and completely blows any Abscess material (Reifert and Coralles' main project following Autopsy's break-up) out of the water. However, that isn't to say that the band's sound is exactly as it was in the '90s. Autopsy experiment with new styles and structures, such as on the epic "Sadistic Gratification," which features over ten minutes of multi-paced, visceral riffage.
