On Monday night (September 14), New Brunswick's Progressive Conservatives won re-election led by Premier Blaine Higgs. Not only is it a big victory for Higgs, but also for his former employers at Irving. And in light of this power consolidation, B.A. Johnston has penned a tune for the province's political moment.
From his cozy confines in Hamilton, B.A. sent love to his East Coast listeners by fleshing out quick chorus, "Don't wanna work for a living / Wish I was born an Irving."
To Johnston, benefitting from decades of resource extraction means waking up at noon, getting to "tell my serfs just what to do," and giving Higgs a ring for a super-sized, assuredly extra-oily Egg McMuffin.
Johnston also provides a look at the pitfalls of media consolidation, referencing Irving's ownership of all three English-language daily newspapers in New Brunswick: "I buy a newspaper, to write a story / Just about how great I am / And if you don't like it, buddy, here's the door / 'Cause I own everything, man."
B.A. Johnston is still available to perform this song and many others when he plays your driveway or lawn. Per a recent update on his website, he'll soon get to work on a new album to follow last year's The Skid Is Hot Tonight.
